If you’re in Ueno 上野にいるなら

Ueno is one of the most popular places for tourists. I guess people would normally visit the park, the Tokyo National Museum and other museums nearby. This area has a lot to offer. If you’re into art, you’d probably check SCAI THE BATH HOUSE and if you’re beer lover, you’d drop by the lovely Yanaka Beer Hall in a traditional Japanese house.

There’s a place that I strongly recommend a visit. It’s the Former Kusuo Yasuda Residence. It’s a gorgeous traditional Japanese house with a beautiful garden. The owner added some western touch to it, which was perfectly blended into the traditional style.

The house was built by businessman Yoshizaburo Fujita in 1919 and two styles of Japanese architecture, shoin-zukuri and sukiya-zukuri, were applied. Later it was sold to Zenshiro Yasuda, son-in-law of Zenjiro Yasuda, the founder of the Yasuda zaibatsu (financial conglomerate). After that the Yasuda family continued living there until about 20 years ago.

The house itself is lovely, but the garden adds more charm to it. And it’s amazing how the house is designed to admire the gorgeous garden. Thanks to the “Gankou” structure of the house, the garden and the whole space look deeper than actually they are.  I felt it was so calming and soothing to sit down and look at the garden from any room.

The house is open only on Wednesdays and Saturdays, but it’s really worth a visit!
