Machine translation vs humans

Interesting article on the Economist about machine translation.

Several months ago, I was watching a Youtube video in which a French person talks about his company’s new initiatives with strong French accent. My friend told me to turn on the machine translation function. So I did and it was hilarious! The subtitles were exceptionally bad and they made no sense at all. I couldn’t stop laughing for a bit. The quality of Google Translate itself must have improved compared to the past, but it doesn’t seem to be applied to Youtube. You’ll really realise machine translation really cannot replace humans when you see the subtitles. They are good for a laugh though!
